Gov. Cuomo Proposes Crackdown on Wage Theft

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is floating a proposal for new legislation designed to toughen the penalties for employers who withhold wages from employees — commonly called wage theft.

If enacted, his proposal would install new penalties ranging from a Class B misdemeanor for wage theft of less than $1,000 to a Class B felony for wage theft exceeding $50,000.

The proposal would also expand the power of the New York State Department of Labor to make referrals for criminal prosecution to the Attorney General and District Attorneys.
